Figural Stoneware Jug with Blue Hat by Julie Desert Armanville -7"

Hand-crafted in glazed stoneware, this whimsical jug takes the form of a rounded head crowned with a wide-brimmed cobalt-blue hat. Softly modeled features and a contemplative expression emerge from the creamy off-white surface, while touches of reddish glaze at the temples suggest hair beneath the hat. The hat forms the rim of the vessel, while a sturdy handle is integrated at the reverse. The contrast between the luminous face and the deep blue hat lends the piece a striking graphic presence. Signed JDA to the underside. Very good condition, with minor irregularities and natural glaze variations inherent to the handmade process.

Contemporary ceramicist Julie Désert Armanville draws upon the artistic legacy of Vallauris pottery, where postwar experimentation fostered a distinctive language of expressive figuration. Having worked in Roger Capron’s atelier from 1972 to 1982, she developed an approach characterized by tactile surfaces, simplified forms, and a deep sensitivity to the material qualities of clay. This piece reflects the long Mediterranean tradition of anthropomorphic vessels, reimagined through the playful forms and handcrafted authenticity associated with Vallauris.

Equally compelling as a vase, utensil or paintbrush holder, or sculptural object, the piece brings warmth and personality to an interior. Its restrained palette and playful silhouette complement contemporary, rustic, and Mediterranean-inspired settings alike. While jug-shaped in form, the highly textured interior would be difficult to clean thoroughly, so it is best regarded as a decorative piece rather than for everyday pouring.
