Description 

The Torch Lily, or Kniphofia uvaria, is an impressive perennial ideal for brightening sunny flower borders. This South African native forms dense clumps of grass-like, semi-evergreen leaves from which tall flower spikes emerge, reaching up to 4 feet. Each spike features a striking display of tubular flowers that transition from red buds to yellow blooms, creating a distinctive two-toned effect. Blooming from late spring to early summer, these flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. With a long flowering period and individual blooms lasting up to 18 days, the Torch Lily is a valuable addition to any garden seeking vibrant, enduring color.

Torch Lily bulbs develop tall spikes of red and yellow flowers during summer, serving as striking perennial bloomers. They flower from April to June in plains and May to July in hilly regions. Plant between February and April in plains or March and May in hills for best results.

Environment

Cultivate your Red Hot Poker plant in soil that drains well and place it in a spot with full sunlight.

Provide moderate watering, around one inch weekly during the warmer months. While the plant’s crown and roots are robust, they are susceptible to damage from waterlogged soil, particularly in winter and early spring.

For the best chance of perennial growth each spring, plant it in sandy loam or well-drained raised beds enriched with plenty of compost.

Landscape Use

Plant red hot pokers in front of an evergreen hedge or along the edge of an evergreen tree to show off the colorful flowers. Plant them in clumps to have a greater visual effect instead of one individual plant. You can also plant Red Hot Pokers near a pond or wetland area, as long as they're planted in a well-drained soil.
